Existing evidence suggests that functional diversity rather than species richness is relevant for soil functioning, but this has rarely been assessed simultaneously at more than one trophic level. This critically limits the prediction of consequences of biodiversity loss for soil functioning, because soil organisms interact in complex food webs. In a laboratory experiment at European Ecotron facility, we tested the hypothesis that functional dissimilarity of both litter mixtures and litter-feeding soil fauna interactively affect soil processes. Our results show that the different litter mixtures and soil fauna communities showed strong effects on litter mass loss, soil carbon and nitrogen leaching, as well as on soil microbial activities, but affected only litter mass loss interactively. Up to 20% of the variation in response variables was explained by functional dissimilarity, suggesting a relatively small, but ecologically relevant impact of soil functional diversity on soil process rates.

Many experiments have already investigate the effect of earthworms on the growth of a single plant species. However, new systems of culture based on the mixture of several species are currently developed to respond to new agricultural standards. The goal of this experiment was to study how earthworms modify plant growth when several species are cropped together, in an intercropping system. Since legumes have the capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen, our study focused on phosphorus that is a nutrient more likely to be limiting in such system.

Detritivores influence directly organic matter decomposition by feeding on leaf litter. However they can also have an indirect effect on litter decomposition by stimulating microbial decomposers. A microcosm experiment was set up to better understand each of this two mechanisms by which detritivores affect decomposition process.
The first objective was to test if fresh fecal pellet could increase the decomposition of intact litter by acting like a fertilizer. The second objective consisted in studying the effect of reduced water availability on litter consumption rate by detritivore.

Condensed tannins are chemical compounds produced by plants that are still found in leaf litter at the soil surface. Those compounds can influence the decomposition process since they have the ability to complex leaf proteins or exoenzymes from microbial decomposers. The goal of this study was to better understand the effect of litter ingestion by soil macrofauna on the degradation of condensed tannins contained in litter.
